I will never forget the day when… I was the QC and safety dual hat on a job on my own, just me and the super at the Pentagon together. Every day we would have to walk a mile just to get to the Pentagon because the contractor trailer is in north parking. One day, the QC safety regional manager came to the site. The first thing he did was start grilling me on OSHA regulations in a rather aggressive manner. I said to myself, “What is this guy doing here? What does he want from me?”At the end of the day, he did not give me a negative audit, but he did not give me any words of encouragement, and he knew exactly what I was dealing with. I was dealing with being on the site with a superintendent who was uncooperative and uncommunicative and working against me, and it was just me and him dealing with a team of sprinkler fitter foremen who lacked some extreme levels of respect and discipline, considering the fact that they were union, and union guys don’t really care what you say to them.Anyways, at the end of the day, it was a learning lesson. When that QC regional came to the site and gave me all that drama, I said to myself, “Wow, this is really not fun.” And I said to myself, “When I become a QC regional,” which I knew would happen inevitably considering how long I’ve been doing this, “I knew that I would not treat people that way, and I would be a problem solver, not a problem maker, when I come to any site.”
